Hartlepool United climb of the bottom of the table after two goals inside five minutes led to a dramatic comeback against Grimsby Town at the Suit Direct Stadium.

Ex-player Gavin Holohan scored within five minutes for the Mariners as he scored a stunning goal from 25-yards-out which left Pools a mountain to climb for the rest of the game.

But Keith Curle’s side staged an unbelievable fightback in the second half which led to Alex Lacey and an own goal from Niall Mahmer with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.

So, after a breath-taking Pools display, here is how each player performed:

Ben Killip: 7

Ben Killip kept Pools in the game on numerous occasions, one being on the hour where he made an excellent save with his feet to deny Maher his first goal of the campaign and Grimsby a second.

However, the shot-stopper could improve on his distribution with a number of goal-kicks and long punts up field going out of play.

Reghan Tumilty: 6

Worked tirelessly down the right-hand side providing very good attacking threat and seems to be improving on his defensive duties blocking a few crosses going into the Pools penalty area.

Euan Muarry: 6

Many fans question whether Euan Muarry is good enough for League Two, but Muarry put in a good shift yesterday afternoon. Muarry dealt with the majority of the threats that came his way with this performance something that the 28-year-old can build on.

Alex Lacey: 8

Like Euan Muarry, it has taken time for Alex Lacey to adapt to life at Pools but looks to be growing in confidence game by game, with no doubt this game potentially kick starting his Pools career.

Lacey dealt with most of the threat that came his way and scored an important goal in Pools’ comeback. Although there is some improvement left to make on his game, this performance is no doubt a confidence booster.

David Ferguson: 6

David Ferguson wasn’t his usual self this game, especially in the first half, which Grimsby picked up on attacking his side of the pitch through Holohan and Efete.

However, a drastic improvement in the second half and proved to be vital in Pools’ attack after he swept in both crosses that gave Curle’s side the all-important three points.

Clarke Odour: 7

Clarke Odour looked solid going forward and defensively and seemed to be everywhere on the field sweeping up on the left-hand side and midfield. This allowed Ferguson to bomb up the field suffocate the Grimsby defence.

Nicky Featherstone: 6

Nicky Featherstone made an important interception during the first half when Holohan crossed a dangerous ball into the box before the veteran midfielder cleared it out of danger.

Mohamad Sylla: 7

Looked shaky in the first half but in the second-half, what a player. Mohamad Sylla was the difference in midfield in the second-half, being the rough and tumble defensive midfielder we have been wanting for a while. He did the ugly side of the game well while also proving to be vital in our attack.

Callum Cooke: 7

Like both Lacey and Muarry, life at Pools was a slow start for Peterlee born Callum Cooke. However, looks to be growing game by game and was unlucky a few times with one chance that brought a good save from Cromobe.

Cooke gave away possession cheaply in the opening few minutes which proved to be a let off for the 25-year-old. However, this performance is something he can build on.

Wes McDonald: 7

Wes McDonald was on the Pools players that every time he got on the ball, looked like could provide something with his flare and range of skills put Grimsby defenders on edge, having to drag two men to get near him.

However, seemed to drift out of position and move into a wider role in the first-half, which saw him not receive the ball as often. Like many, drastically improve in the second-half.

Josh Umerah: 7

A classic Josh Umerah display. Up against tough physical opponents it most of the game and was fouled on numerous occasions.

The forward himself will claim the winner with the deftest of touches to hand Curle’s side a precious win.
